Jordan Edge (°1993) is a British multidisciplinary nonbinary artist based in London. Their current practice of assembling multidisciplinary sound-art installations, emerged during a residency at the Kyoto City University of Arts in 2019. Unable to understand and speak Japanese, they started building sonic sculptures inspired by bodily parts that synthesize human noises.

‘Non-Human Sonic Entities’, the installation presented here, was developed during a six-month residency recently awarded by the Art’s Council England and PRS Music Foundation. It combines 3 kinetic sound sculptures. Each in the shape of a hybrid form of human and insect vocal tracts created by A.I., with an interactive CGI environment inside the expo space, and a sound composition to provide a non-human immersive experience. Encountering this artwork, the viewer is able to have a sense of how other organisms could experience life through their senses.

The installation creates a new post-human world and narrative in which we can learn about the world from a non-human perspective. By creating the breathing airflow and audiovisual experience of another species and its nature of reality, the installation opens questions on how we could link humanity back into nature’s ecosystem: by understanding other organisms’ perceptions of life.Ultimately, inviting us to form empathic connections that might break away from society’s ruling anthropocentric worldview.
